It turns out that you really don’t need a special display to get 3-D images and effects on a tablet like Apple’s iPad 2. Jeremie Francone and Laurence Nigay from the Laboratory of Informatics of Grenoble at the EHCI Research Group have created one of the most impressive and, overall, amazing tech demoes for the iPad lately. The French researchers have created a way for the iPad 2’s front-facing camera to read where your eyes are, allowing it to create the illusion of depth in the screen as you move the iPad around without the use of specialized glasses by combining head-tracking technology.

“We track the head of the user with the front facing camera in order to create a glasses-free monocular 3D display. Such spatially-aware mobile display enables to improve the possibilities of interaction. It does not use the accelerometers and relies only on the front camera.”

A series of reports in the past also suggested that Apple could implement glasses-free 3D in gaming for the next-generation iPod touch. Only time will tell what Apple has instored for its valued customers around the globe.
